Doctors for safety

Doctors for Safety was created by the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA) to help provide you the information you need about the work anesthesiologists do to keep patients safe. Too often patients see their anesthesiologists
as doctors who simply
administer medication
that puts them to
sleep during an
operation or
procedure.

Learn the facts

Anesthesiologists are doctors who oversee the entire practice of anesthesia in hospitals and medical centers.

Their rigorous training as medical doctors ensures the in-depth, critical knowledge needed to keep total watch over the entire human body and its responses to surgery and disease. An anesthesiologist’s role is to keep people safe during surgery and intervene when they are not.

Anesthesiologists provide or oversee more than 90 percent of the 40 million estimated anesthetics administered in the U.S. each year.
